Me as a Batman villain

scars cat hair all over suit Batman Joker Catwoman parody Dark Knight Why so serious? crazy cat lady

"Wanna know how I got these scars? Well, I was giving my cats a bath... MEOW! Why so fluffy? Hahahahahahaha!"

Daniel and I were talking about what Batman villain I would be, and I decided to make this cartoon rendering of our conversation. It seems that I'd be somewhere between Catwoman and Joker. I'd probably be called Catlady, also known as Crazy Cat Lady.

Having surgery on Wednesday

I can't breathe like a normal person, and that's supposedly going to be fixed this week. My friend Richard drew a supportive portrait of me:

This is my creepy version of Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid. This is kind of a shitty picture because the picture is too big for my scanner, so I just had to take a picture on my phone.

Music to Haunt to

You've given me exactly eight hours
of melodies and rhythms
to hum softly to myself
and mouth the words to
when I'm alone and unable to sleep
your songs nourish me in
the same way that a full night of dreaming
about your laugh and the curve of your back does,
which is to say that each time I hear "Ice Dance"
I awaken with my head full of dust
and my heart full of lust
and I wander through time like a sleepwalker
until I can get you out of my head
and replace you with a happier tune

Gretta

pets pet dogs puppy puppies boxers watercolor painting art illustration

This is Gretta, the pet boxer I had growing up. She's gone now, but I love her and miss her. She was adorable. When she wagged her tail, her whole body used to wag. It was so cute. She also galloped around like an antelope, so we sometimes called her Grettalope.

"In Vise" and other works I could not translate

The past three nights
I dreamed you were crying.

You stained my doorstep with your tears on the first,
you lamented our fate by my hospital bed on the second,
and I led you and your lover to safety
from the storm of the century on the third
after assuring you that she would warm up
your cold feet, if only you'd ask her.

Still, I was not allowed to touch,
just like now.

I offer you my arms,
and when I think you'll accept them
I wake up wrapped around nothing,
longing to fall back asleep.

I have yet to determine whether these dreams mean
that you are in trouble
or that I am.

Alison Bechdel!

and she signed my copy of dykes to watch out for and i left my copy of are you my mother at home or she would've signed that too she spoke today at Tulane

I met Alison Bechdel and I gave her a drawing I made of her and she said encouraging things to me and signed my copy of Fun Home and my copy of The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For and I am so happy. I’m pretty sure that I’ve never actually met a famous person who I really admire—unless meeting Megara and Cruella DeVille at Disney World counts. I freaked out a little bit.
She gave a lecture at Tulane today, and I wrote down some of the useful/inspirational/interesting things she said. Here are a few of them:
  • When she first started doing Dykes to Watch Out For she didn't have recurring characters because she wasn't confident that she could draw the same people again and again and make them look recognizably the same.
  • "The personal is the political. The political is the personal."
  • Maps are where symbols and reality, signifiers and the signified, meet. Cartoons are maps.
  • TRUTH!
  • "...if we were completely equal and we got what we've been fighting for, we would make ourselves obsolete—we wouldn't need gay bars or women's book stores anymore."
  • "Can trauma ever be good?"
  • Are You My Mother? was originally going to be a book about relationships, the self and the other, but once she started working on it she realized that she needed to write about her mother.
  • When asked about how to get over writer's block: "Just sit the hell down. Get a piece of rope and tie yourself to your chair."
  • "What makes us want to create is a lack or damage or pain within us."
  • On why she was okay putting her parents in the spotlight in her memoirs but felt the need to minimize her brothers' roles: "It felt okay to write about my parents because my parents were the ones who fucked me up."
  • Sydney is her favorite character in Dykes to Watch Out For because she feels that she sort of became Sydney. However, all of the characters are reflections of her.
  • "I only ever have one cat."

No love for Stannis

Game of thrones stannis reminds me of eeyore stannis baratheon gloomy nobody loves me evil george r. r. martin

Stannis from George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones series always kind of reminds me of Eeyore. Being like, "Boohoo, nobody loves me!" is sort of his M.O. I always feel a bit bad for Stannis, even though I don't particularly like anything he's done so far. He just strikes me as a typical children's show villain who wasn't hugged enough as a child, whose brothers got all of the good Christmas presents, and who now lives in a dark tower thinking of ways to get back at the world and take back what he feels he's entitled to. Often when I'm reading the second book, I just want to put an arm around Stannis and be like, "Hey, buddy, hang in there. Someone will appreciate you someday. In the meantime, though, probably stop hanging out with dark sorceresses because that's sort of a red flag for evildoing." Melisandrel is totally not a good influence.

Why do I want to?

marceline adventure time i'm just your problem i should've have to be the one who makes up with you goth gothic girl

First attempt at drawing on iPad with fancy Bamboo Wacom stylus. It's a lot easier to work with than the old one. I like it a lot. I'm still getting used to drawing on a tablet, in general, though. It's probably going to take a lot of practice before I start producing things I like at all.
I made her have giant freak hands with long spider fingers because that's pretty much what my hands look like, and I like to draw what I know.
I'll probably try to make this look not shitty at a later date when I don't have a sinus headache. For now, I am off to watch Netflix until I pass out.

From the Depths is publishing my work

Just received notice that From the Depths by Haunted Water Press is publishing "For Rico, Jack's Last Request" in their Summer issue! I know that it's going to be available in print, but I'm not sure if an e-version will be available as well. I guess I'll find out when it gets closer to publishing time, though I'm pretty sure it won't be out until sometime in June. Still, I'm excited!

More Adventure Time fan art. Decided to not do the traditional Adventure Time cartoon style and sort of made up my own style. For some reason PB is wearing a different crown that looks more like Ice King's than her usual one. Also, this is based on the "What Was Missing" episode. The words in the background are to "I'm Just Your Problem" and are as follows:
I'm sorry I don't treat you like a goddess
Is that what you want me to do?
I'm sorry I don't treat you like you're perfect
Like all your little royal subjects do
I'm sorry I'm not made of sugar
Am I not sweet enough for you?
Is that why you always avoid me?
That must be such an inconvenience to you
Well, I'm just your problem...

My scanner makes a weird shadow in the corner of things for some reason. Stupid scanner. Used the Sakuri watercolor set on this one. Still getting used to the gouache set and can't find my good paint brushes for it.

I have the plague and am staying in bed and drawing stuff until further notice. Expect more cartoons.

Self-portrait with Pie: Second attempt at drawing on iPad

pie chicken potpie drawing art sketch cartoon hungry food me gpoy self portraits
Daniel decided to make chicken pot pie. I provided moral support by sitting in a chair near the kitchen and drawing a picture of myself devouring a pie on my tablet. I just ordered myself a new stylus, and I'm pretty excited about it. And by "ordered myself a new stylus," I mean that I ordered two new styluses because I wasn't sure which one was the better buy, and both had pretty good reviews.

I'm really, really, really hungry. I hope that the pie is done soon. Apparently we have to wait for it to cool because everyone knows that the inside of chicken potpie is molten lava. Om nom nom nom...

Macy

First time using my new gouache set, still getting used to the distribution of color and all that. Cannot for the life of me find my good paintbrushes.
This is Macy, the shih tzu I had growing up. My mom loved her a lot, and sometimes would cook spaghetti for her. When I think of Macy, I think of her with spaghetti sauce all over her face. =] I'll probably send this to my mom after I do one of Gretta, the boxer we had, too.
She died a few years ago when I was away at college. I still miss her sometimes. What a cute puppy!
